Spatial Typography

These two images are the final result of my spatial typography project. The Book is for the front of the poster and on the reverse side is the images of each letter inside the book. I decided to go with the poster idea instead of the film of the book, is because of the difficulty I’d have with the lighting. Each letter required a different angle of light to show the letter form, If i were to film, I would have to of moved the lights around whilst on camera, to do that would be distracting for the viewer and deter them away from the visual effects.

Evaluation:

I enjoyed the process of this project, from initial ideas to creating something physical that has an underlying meaning. My final piece is a poster that I mounted on card for improvement of quality. Because I could not hand in the book that I experimented in with the effects already there, I decided to create a poster that is a representation of the book with a front cover, and the secret content on the back. Not many people would turn a poster over to see the other side.

Out of the two books, I settled on the smaller, but thicker of the books because of paper type and thickness inside the book allowed for the ‘C’ of secret to be seen easier through the page. I also thought it better to use a book that didn’t have images inside which was the case with my other book I brought.

The actual experiment with the letters for the final piece went really well. I had access to an SLR set up on a tripod as high as possible that then looked down on a table with the book on it. I chosen to use an ordinary table as my backdrop for the book because I thought that this could be another way of connecting back to my main ‘space’ which is the library, books are usually read at a table. I had two ordinary lamps with me and put one each side of the book out of shot. Whilst showing the effects, I wanted to avoid creating a harsh book shadow, which is why I had a lamp on either side of the book. I also turned off the main light in the room and did the experiment in the evening so tat my only light source was the lamps, I then could have complete control. The book was propped up so that is was flatter for the angle of the camera because I couldn’t get the camera directly over the book as the table was in the way in order to see the effects properly.

I had a second idea of filming the process instead of photographing. The idea was that I’d film flipping through the book and demonstrating each letter effect. However when it came to experimenting, I found that it became quite difficult when moving the lighting around in between each page because each page required a different angle which is the result of using different visual effects.

If I were to do this final piece again, I would consider a larger print out for a better dramatic effect and to show off the effects much larger (with each image almost book size). It’s harder to appreciate each image and it’s visual effect displayed at a smaller size. However as it is, I’m pleased with the results.
