Book Series

Evaluation:
These are my final three book cover designs. As they’re designed for hard back books, each has the pieces at the side to fold around the cover. Simplicity was my main goal with these book designs, I wanted to create designs that were stong, with the fun and playfulness commonly found with younger children’s books. These books are designed for eight year old’s, which is no way near too old to appreciate some bright colours!

Creating these designs was fairly simple and straight forward because I had already created the illustrations and added the water colour. The background for the covers is a water colour effect that matches the colours of the water coloured images. I arranged the background to compliment the imagery with a gradiented effect in the middle that slightly overlaps the imagery.

I decided to keep the folds white on each side of the hard cover sleeves because they’re not the main part of the design, these bits merely folded into the book.

When it came to putting the sleeves on to the books I had made, it’s only at that point did I realise that I didn’t consider folding measurements! So unfortunately, the back cover design stops short of the cover. I did at the last minute change the size of the spine after I measured the spines of my final books, however this wasn’t enough. After putting the covers on the books, it’s made me realise I should allow more time for putting the pieces together, that way I could have realised the problem and had to time to re-print and solve the issue. Allowing more time would have made me realise that I also missed some capital letters on the spine of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. And there was a situation where I somehow exported James and the Giant Peach without the faint colour on the back cover which was only realised once it was too late to change. This is a learning curve and something that I’ll remember for the next time. The front cover is the correct size, because I wanted the front design to go slightly into the inner book with the fold. However it turned out to be the correct size once I’d done the folding just for the front cover.
