New Project: Screen Based Communication 2

In this new project, we will be focusing how to develop and create a website for ourselves. What that website will look like, show, and promote is completely down to us as a designer/ illustrator or what ever it is we consider ourselves to be or want to be. I myself am interested in Graphic Design, Brand Identity and Web-Design. I’d like to create a website that sells myself as a reliable Designer to hire. I’m currently not so interested in freelance work, however there’s plenty of time for that to change.

The project requires us to research into all the aspects of web-design and in doing so, learn enough to create a reasonably looking website ourselves. We can descide whether we’d like to focus on learning HTML and coding of the site, or we can focus more on it’s looks by not coding all elements of the site. As much as I’d love to create a fantastically looking website, five weeks is not enough to learn everything there is to know to do that. I’m sure web designers learn more and more everyday and it would take a lot longer than five weeks to even slightly measure up to a trained coder/ designer. Although I know only the very basics of HTML, I have decided to build my website completely from scratch (I hope) so that i can understand what it takes to create a website how it’s meant to be so that it’s 100 percent search engine friendly.

The website will be an online portfolio for myself that will show my work, recent projects, information about me and a contact page. I need to come up with a suitable grid system for the website that is both aesthetically pleasing, has good usability and accessibility. The most important thing is that the site shows off me as a designer, in my style and keeps the attention of viewers. They say that most people will leave a website within 5 seconds. So it’s a big challenge to design and create something that keeps their attention, and invites them to look further into it. One of the reasons people will leave a website, is because of it’s lack of usability, this is something that will play a key part when I come to design the site.

I’m looking forward to learning as much as possible, or rather that is my aim!
