These two images I found on the internet are from The Literacy Foundation, the quote is ‘When a child doesn’t read, imagination disappears’. I was once taught that there’s one rule when it comes to advertising which is to do with the relation between the image and the text, it’s generally either a peculiar image with straight text or a straight image with peculiar text. It means that in this case, it’s the image that does not make sense, however once the text has been read, the image then makes sense and the same visa versa. These two images are of a lady and a man dressed as popular book characters; Cinderella and Peter pan. Both are sick, pale and seem lifeless. The advert is designed to make them seem empty without the imagination they so desperately need in life. With the growing society of video games and movies, the idea of reading fizzles out after young childhood. I myself am guilty for knowing such fairy tales from videos rather than the books. However I still found the books just as enchanting even after seeing the film. But without books, how will children develop their imaginations? It’s this strong message they have portrayed through these posters, they’re informative and get the point across in a simple manor. All advertising plays on the idea that an image is worth a thousand words and these are no exception. Hopefully the message in these posters, has inspired people to go out and really enjoy good old fashioned reading again.
