Evaluating ‘Introduction To Visual Communication’

Our first unit flew by; I enjoyed the combination of small projects all based around completely different subject matters. I’ve learnt a lot in the sense of software through the tutorials, created some letterpress, learnt how to make various types of books, created a heat map and finally created my own book. Although I completed everything in time, I think that if given more time or if I managed my time better then I would have been able to be more analytical with my work and research into each part of the unit thoroughly. However what I did manage to produce in the end I’m proud of, specifically the last project of the unit, which was the editorial. Using our skills that we learnt in bookbinding, I created a Concertina book consisting of ten pages, and I’m really happy with the final result. I created the book with a hardback front and cover, and then added a design to the front and back to give the book a meaning and sense of style. Second to that was experimenting with the Letterpress. What I enjoy more than anything, is manually getting stuck in to work, it’s always more motivating and fulfilling to get creative and be involved in each process taken to create an outcome. Sometimes working on a computer can seem too safe, letting the option of mistakes happen when getting involved is all part of the fun, with each obstacle to overcome. I thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of this unit; the type and tape forced involvment as a group, the bookbinding introduced me to something entirely new and I even made my own hard cover book. I’m sure the next unit will include more challenges and oppotunities to develop my knowledge and learn more every day.
