Final Major Project – Illustration Development

These are all my illustrations together in colour for my booklet. At this point they’re seeming very cartoon like as a set. But as I have mentioned before, I need to determine whether these will work by designing the layouts of the booklet.

In order from left to right these are the article facts:

1. Ill-fitting bras.

2. Sun exposure for frequent fliers.
This illustration was all about the sun which was the important element. I initially tried tried only the windows of the plane because that’s where the sun comes in however it was hard to show sun glare through such a simple illustration. Maybe the windows would have worked without that, however I chose this illustration because it works as a whole showing threwindows (the same colour as the sun) and the plane passing the sun.

3. Candle-lit dinners.
This article is about how the fragrances from candles can cause headaches and could possibly be dangerous. I have illustrated a simple pictogram of the characters at a table with the important candles in the middle. The colours are simple here because after trying a few, I found different colours over-complicated the illustration.

4. Tea
This article is about cancer of the esophagus caused by drinking hot drinks and scolding causing damaged tissue. The importance of this illustration is the heat lines which are steam and very easily recognisable at ‘hot’.

5. Housepride
This illustration is to demonstrate the cleaning products of house proud people that will usually use more cleaning products regularly and supposedly exposing themself to harmful fragrances and chemicals that apparently cause cells to change and help cancer ones develop.

6. Child cancer cause by car fumes.
This article is about how children living in built up areas or near power plants will be exposed more regularly to harmful fumes and therefore, get child cancer because of it…

7. Flip flops and skin cancer.
This artcile is about how people regularly forget to use sun protection on their feet and how flip flops leave the delicate skin exposed to sun rays. For the illsutration I had very few ideas to incorporate sun and feet exposure so instead I chose a very simple and literal illustration.

8. Being a woman, and being a man.
These are two articles but the titles conflict each other. The article about men suggests men get cancer more simply because they will not visit the doctor as often as women which makes no sense. And the woman article is about how women are generally more prone to getting cancer. I have used a simple pictogram and aim to put both of these articles side by side with the man and woman pointing at each other to suggest ‘well who is it? Me or you?’ because of their similarity and conflict or messages.

9. Full English breakfast
This article is about how a fry up with foods prone to high cholesterol will cause cancer. I initially was going to use a breakfast plate illustration will all the pieces, however this seemed too complicated and instead to add some humour I have simplified it to two eggs and a sausage to inflict a comic side,

10. Bubble bath
This article is about how the fumes of bubble bath can cause headaches and also that the product can penetrate the skin and cause cancer. In the illustration I have exaggerated with the bubbles in the bath.

11. Being Southern
This article is about how affluent women tend to take up careers and have children later risking cancer. The illustration is a simple business women in front of the south.

12. Crayons
This article is about how best selling crayons were found to have a cancer chemical in them. The illustration is straight forward with a drawn line.

13. Tall Women
This illustration is an exaggerated tall women too tall for a door frame.

14. Baby car seats
This article is about a cancer chemical found in the foam in baby car seats.

15. Cats and dogs

16. Backyard cancer risk
This article is about how Australians will forget to wear sun cream in their gardens whilst barbequing. I originally drew an Australian wearing too many clothes to over exaggerate however it seemed a bit too much as I generally want to use pictograms when using people in the illustrations. And my illustration needed the face expression, so instead i have drawn a barbeque that is still relevant.

17. Airport scanners.

This article is about how airport scanners are xrays and may change change in cells that lead to cancer. The illustration is of a man stood behind an xray machine and in front you can see his bones and above and below he is still normal.

18. Broken hearts
